Starfall Alternatives

What Starfall's free version covers, why families look elsewhere, and the apps and sites to try instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is Starfall entirely free for children?

No, Starfall is partly free. Its four-step Learn-to-Read program is free for every child, and the rest of its website has a free sample across every topic. A Starfall membership, $35 a year on Starfall's website, opens all of its activities from Pre-K through 5th grade. In the app stores, Starfall's main app costs $5.99 a month.

Does Starfall offer a free trial for new users?

No. Starfall has no free trial because its free sample and its free Learn-to-Read program have no time limit. A family can use the free part of Starfall for as long as they like and pay $35 a year on Starfall's website when they want the rest.

Can parents track their child's progress on Starfall?

No. Starfall says that individualized tracking and reports are not provided, by design. To see your child's progress, choose an app that reports it: Wonster Words emails you a daily and a weekly report on what your child played, and Reading Eggs has a parent progress dashboard.

Is Starfall safe for kids to use without supervision?

Starfall says it does not display any advertising to children on its websites or apps, and its main app's listing says no ads appear whether you are a free user or a subscriber. Starfall is run by a nonprofit. On the App Store, its main app's privacy label reads Data Not Linked to You, and the Starfall Learn to Read app's reads Data Not Collected.

How does Starfall compare with Reading Eggs for early literacy?

Starfall is a low-cost phonics supplement, $35 a year on its website, with a free sample and a free Learn-to-Read program. Reading Eggs is one plan of separate reading, phonics, and math programs for up to four children, at $13.99 a month or $99.99 a year after a 30-day free trial. Reading Eggs has a parent progress dashboard, and Starfall tracks no progress, by design. In our use, Reading Eggs' narration has a strong Australian accent, and its accent setting changes only some of it.

Are there offline reading games for kindergarteners like Starfall?

Yes. Starfall Learn to Read, Starfall's own free app, says on its listing that no internet connection is required, though Starfall's main app needs one. Wonster Words has full features available offline once lessons are downloaded, and Khan Academy Kids keeps a preset Offline section. Test any app in airplane mode before a trip.

Starfall's website on a laptop, with a membership price and a need for a connection, and a question mark asking what to use instead, answered by three other devices: a tablet that works with no connection, a phone showing a progress report for a parent, and a tablet with a set path to follow.
